Looking to find out what a good wedding timeline consists of?
From Beginning To End:
Firstly, planning a wedding can be extremely overwhelming, and one of the most crucial aspects is nailing down the timeline. A well-structured timeline ensures a smooth and enjoyable day for everyone involved, from the happy couple to the vendors. With over 400 weddings photographed, my suggestions outline a typical wedding day timeline including a first look and a mock exit, to give you a solid starting point.
Morning (The Getting Ready Phase)
- 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Hair and Makeup Artists arrive and begin working on the bridal party. This is a great time for some pre-wedding photos of the bridesmaids in their matching robes! Snacks and drinks are essential to keep everyone energized.
- 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM: Photographer and videographer arrive to capture the getting-ready process. These candid moments are often some of the most cherished memories. Pop a bottle of bubbly and raise a glass. ( Great photo opportunity!)
- 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM: The bride gets dressed with the help of her bridesmaids and mother. This is a special moment, often filled with emotion and excitement. The groom and groomsmen might be getting ready at a separate location during this time.
The First Look (A Special Moment)
- 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM: The bride and groom have their first look! This is a private moment for the couple to see each other before the ceremony, often resulting in beautiful and emotional photos. The bridal party and immediate family might be present (at a respectful distance).
- 11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Bride and groom take photos together, along with the wedding party. This allows for more relaxed and intimate portraits before the ceremony.
The Ceremony (The Main Event)
- 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Guests begin to arrive at the ceremony location. Music plays softly as they find their seats.
- 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM: The ceremony begins! This is the moment you’ve been waiting for.
- 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM: The ceremony concludes, and the newlyweds are officially married! Guests begin to congratulate the happy couple.
The Cocktail Hour (A Time to Mingle)
- 1:30 PM – 2:30 PM: Cocktail hour begins! Guests enjoy drinks and appetizers. The bridal party might take a few more formal photos during this time, but having done the majority before the ceremony, it allows them to enjoy more of the cocktail hour.
The Reception (Let’s Celebrate!)
- 2:30 PM – 3:00 PM: Guests are seated for the reception. The newlyweds are announced and make their grand entrance.
- 3:00 PM – 3:30 PM: First dance. This is a beautiful and romantic moment for the couple.
- 3:30 PM – 5:00 PM: Dinner is served. Guests enjoy a delicious meal while the DJ or band plays music.
- 4:00 PM – 4:30 PM (During Dinner Service): Welcome speeches from the best man, maid of honor, and/or parents of the bride and groom. Placing the speeches during dinner service allows for a more relaxed and natural flow. Guests are already seated and engaged, and it avoids breaking up the dance floor later.
- 5:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Cake cutting. Another classic wedding tradition.
- 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM: Dancing and celebration! Guests hit the dance floor and celebrate the happy couple. Other activities, like photo booths or games, might also take place during this time.
The Mock Exit (Before the Photographer Leaves)
- 8:00 PM – 8:30 PM: A staged or “mock” exit with sparklers or other festive elements. This allows the photographer and videographer to capture this special moment before their coverage ends, even if the actual exit is later. This also allows the couple to participate and enjoy the moment with more of their guests.
The Real Exit (Wind Down)
- 9:00 PM (or whenever the reception ends): The newlyweds make their actual exit.
Post-Wedding (The Wind Down)
- 9:00 PM onwards: After-party (optional). For those who want to keep the celebration going, an after-party at a nearby bar or lounge can be a fun way to end the night.
Important Considerations:
- Travel Time: Factor in travel time between locations, especially if the ceremony and reception are in different places.
- Vendor Coordination: Communicate closely with your vendors to ensure they are all on the same page regarding the timeline.
- Buffer Time: Build in some buffer time for unexpected delays. Things rarely go exactly according to plan!
- Personalization: This is your wedding. Don’t be afraid to adjust the timeline to reflect your preferences.
Creating a detailed wedding day timeline is an essential step in the planning process. By following this template, incorporating a first look and mock exit, placing speeches during dinner, and tailoring it to your specific needs, you can ensure a smooth, stress-free, and unforgettable wedding day!
Also, choosing a venue with coordination and all inclusive packages can take a lot of the guesswork out of the equation. One of the reasons I love working with and recommend Pine Rose Cabins in Lake Arrowhead.
